A word about Contact Forms…
Contact Forms have become increasingly more common. Here are a few reasons why:
- First, you can require certain pertinent information like Name and Contact Info (email, phone, whatever you need).
- Secondly, if you publish an email address on a webpage it is susceptible to being scanned by any number of internet “spiders.” These little automated programs scan the code of web pages looking for various information including email addresses. The “nasty-bugger” variety of these (more commonly known as “spambots”) add that email address to hundreds upon hundreds of bulk mail lists. This can happen in as little as a day or two.
A Contact Form collects information from a user, then generates an email and distributes it to whomever you want. As an additional anti-spamming measure for content coming through the form itself, a CAPTCHA is employed. A CAPTCHA is the part of the form that asks you to enter what you see in that little image of distorted letters & numbers. This works because (so far), image scanning software can only recognize text when it is nice and neat. The distortion that your eye is able to ignore totally confuses spambots and prevents them from submitting the form. Hurray!
The downside of contact forms is that people find them impersonal, wondering if they go anywhere at all. This is a legitimate concern.
